Are you sitting comfortably?
Then I'll begin.
Sometimes children, when hotel owners and managers close their eyes very, very tightly - they can imagine all sorts of wonderful things happening to their business. Because these wonderful things happen in their heads (but only when their eyes are closed very, very tightly remember) some hotel owners and managers can confuse them with reality and they think these things can really happen.
Aren't they silly boys and girls?

He stood there with his eyes tightly closed, thinking very hard (in a sort of Winnie-the-pooh posture).
"So who are your target customers then?" I asked again.
The manager stood behind his owner. Obviously concerned at the silence our once animated conversation had dropped into, he felt compelled to break it,
"Everybody!" He blurted.
"That's nice." I continued,
"So how are you going to find everybody?"
Winnie-the-pooh had stopped thinking very, very hard by this time, and was now ready to offer us the results of his efforts.
"I think we appeal to a broad spectrum of customers", he said. Silence descended once more.
"So if you appeal to everyone, tell me why, at the height of the tourist season, you haven't filled your hotel once this year?"

Do you know why chrildren? Is it because:
a) Reaching out to "everybody" is very difficult and/or very expensive to do?
b) Without an understanding of who your customers really are, it's very difficult to write adverts, create web pages and build packages which appeal to their needs?
c) You can't please all of the people all of the time - nor can you sell to all of the people all of the time. It's called a "scattergun" approach - a mile wide, an inch deep and no *&^%$£ good to anyone.
...or do you have your own ideas children? Tell uncle Al what you think.
Isn't winnie the pooh silly?
