Valentines weekend is fast approaching.
So this means there are special offers popping up here and there for Valentine weekend breaks. Some hotels have put a lot of thought and effort into their packages. But it's important - as a marketer - to make sure that everyone in the team understands how important it is to take the bookings and have happy customers. Otherwise it can all go the way of the pear. Just like it did for the hotel in Oban, Scotland - where my brother-in-law booked...

Just like it did for the hotel in Oban, Scotland - where my brother-in-law booked...
So what went wrong?
Well, he booked it online.
...and could only get a twin room for his Valentine package. Well, I suppose this might happen if you've sold all your doubles.
Except the hotel hasn't sold all its doubles. If you go online and look (as my brother-in-law did) you can see not just one, but LOTS of double rooms. Of course you can't book them for the Valentines deal, you can only book them at their normal price. Because some prat hasn't understood how to set up the offer on the website properly, or perhaps because another prat isn't watching what's going on.
He's a nice bloke my brother-in-law, so he telephoned the hotel and asked if he could swap his twin room for a double. After all, they have plenty of doubles to sell and a twin room isn't really ideal for a Valentine stay. Is it?
"You can only have the rooms specified in the package when you booked" - said the prat who answered the phone.
"I have no availability on doubles for the Valentine package" (why do they all talk like that?).
So he called me. I looked at the website myself and sure enough - lots of double rooms for sale, but not if you want to stay on a Valentine package!
Perhaps some sort of strange Victorian values being applied?
Oh well, it's their train set. I suppose they can do what they like with it.
