It's an expression that never looks quite right to me.

"Hand picked".

At least, not when it's used in the context of a "specially selected" hotel.

It just looks wrong. When you think about all the things that can be hand picked: Mushrooms; daffodils; firing squads; noses...

Does that expression really send the right message out to your customers? Do they "hand pick" a hotel?

...they must have big hands...

I have a dilemma.
Somebody wants me to use the expression "hand picked" to describe their business on a web page.

I've written it down here on a page in my notebook. I've loaded it onto a page on the web server.

It doesn't look right. Especially not when I think about all the other ways I can say "exclusive" or "special". for example:

- Prime

- Superior

- Finest

- Best

- Supreme

- Superb

- Excellent - you get the idea?

"hand picked" isn't doing it for me. Even the word "choice" is better at conveying an impression that this is the hotel you should choose to book.

Do people really "hand pick" a hotel?

Nah - of course they don't. The select a hotel. They choose a hotel. They'll choose a fine hotel or the best hotel or an excellent hotel. But they won't hand pick it.

Maybe the part of speech is wrong? If I treat it as one word (handpicked) is it an adjective or a verb? Ah - I might be onto something here!

If we say a hotel is handpicked - do we mean it has been specially selected because it is good at something? Or do we simply mean we've chosen it?

It's more likely to be the former isn't it? In which case if the hotel is good at something, we still haven't told the reader what it is. "Hand picking" something doesn't tell the reader which attributes, behaviours, effects or results led to us hand picking it in the first place.

You see "hand picked" on many hotel websites. I wonder what they mean?

I know - I'm being obtuse - they really mean "select" or "special". So why don't they say that?
